Tyler Bridges

Journalist Tyler Bridges joins the show to discuss his latest article in The Advocate about Governor-elect John Bel Edwards' unlikely journey to the Governor's mansion. Bridges talks about how Senator David Vitter lost ground. 

John Folse

Chef John Folse joins Jim to chat about his newest book, Can You Dig It: Louisiana's Authoritative Collection of Vegetable Cookery.  Folse comments on what went into creating this giant cook book and the variety of photographs within the book. This is Folse's tenth book.

Kevin Cope

LSU Facility Senate President Kevin Cope discusses how Les Miles managed to stay the head coach for the Tigers. Cope also comments on the censure matter with LSU President F. King Alexander.  

10/08 Thursday: Jesse Ventura, Emrys Staton, John Folse, Julianne Thompson, Daryl Purpera

Hour 1:

Jesse Ventura

Former governor of Minnesota, Navy SEAL and Professional Wrestler Jesse Ventura joins the conversation to talk about conspiracies and the 2016 presidential election.  

Ventura believes the biggest conspiracy in the US is the assassination of President John Kennedy. He says he still doesn't try to figure out who killed him but if new information comes out he is eager to learn.  

Hour 2:

Emrys Staton

The Reverend Emrys Staton chats with Jim about illegal immigration in the United State and his forum at the Unitarian church in Baton Rouge called Expanding the Border Between the United State and Mexico: Enforcement Beyond Fences.  Staton was arrested for his activism but has never spent a night in jail. 

Staton says he's been appalled by some things that come out of Donald Trump's mouth. He doesn't believe the border needs to be militarized to be effective. 

John Folse

Chef John Folse joins the show to remember another Louisiana chef, Paul Prudhomme. Prudhomme passed away today at the age of 75. 

Julianne Thompson

Former co-chair of the Atlanta Tea Party and founder of the Free America Project Julianne Thompson chats with Jim about Majority House Leader Kevin McCarthy dropping out of the race for Speaker of the House. 

Thompson says she was shocked when she heard McCarthy dropped out. She says Republicans should use this as a chance to press the reset button and put a fresh face in office. 

Daryl Purpera 

Louisiana Legislative Auditor Daryl Purpera comments on the resignation of Louisiana Department of Veterans Affairs Secretary David LaCerte.

Gregory Guzik

Gregory Guzik is a Professor of Physics and Astronomy at LSU.  He shares the involvement of the university with the international space station. 

David Madden

David Madden is a Civil War historian and author.  He shares his latest book, The Tangled Web of the Civil War and Reconstruction. 

HOUR TWO: 

John Folse

John Folse is a Louisiana Chef and founder of Lafitte’s Landing Restaurant.  Folse shares news of his upcoming book Can You Bake It: The Dirt On Vegetables.   

Cary Deaton 

Cary Deaton is a New Orleans Attorney.  He just announced his candidacy for the upcoming Gubernatorial race.  Deaton was a Democratic candidate in the 2011 Governor's election.  Deaton says that John Bel Edwards was meant to be a "spoiler" for his election.

HOUR ONE: 

Tina Freeman

Tina Freeman is a photographer of architecture, landscape, portraits, and interiors.  She has published in House and Gardens, Southern Accents, and New York Times Magazine.  Currently, she lives in New Orleans and Italy.  Freeman shares her new book, Artists' Spaces.  Morgan Northrop joins us as well.  Northrop helped to shape the book.  Freeman also speaks about her time with the late Andy Warhol.  

Matt and Ted Lee

Matt Lee and Ted Lee are brothers and authors of The Lee Bros. Southern Cookbook, The Lee Bros. Simple Fresh Southern, and The Lee Bros. Charleston Kitchen.  They discuss today their new TV show, "Southern Uncovered with The Lee Brothers," which premiered June 14th.  Their New Orleans episode airs July 19th.  @TheLeeBros

John Folse

John Folse is a New Orleans chef who specializes in crafting unique Cajun creations.  He has had international success with Lafitte’s Landing Restaurant.  

Gubernatorial Q&A

For years, Louisiana has had the highest murder per capita rate in the country and New Orleans Police recently reported they've already eclipsed 100 homicides for this calendar year.  As governor, what steps would you take to reduce the murder rate? 
 

Scott Angelle wants to supplement local police with State Police and "maybe National Guard."  Angelle also says "Crime on the streets is a result of a breakdown of the family unit." 
Jay Dardenne wants to maintain the state police presence in the French Quarter and also feels we should engage local and faith based groups. 
David Vitter did not respond. 
John Bel Edwards asks if it is a coincidence that Louisiana has the highest incarceration rate and the highest crime rate. 

HOUR TWO:

John White

John White is the Louisiana State Superintendent of Education.  Louisiana's ACT average score has gone from 19.2 to 19.4.  2,000 more African-Americans in Louisiana recevied TOPS this year.  @LouisianaSupe

Bob Courtney

Bob Courtney remembers the late Louisiana Secretary of State Fox McKeithen who died ten years ago today.  Courtney recalls McKeithen was a brilliant storyteller and many thought he would be governor.
